These bacteria produce the virulence factors (also known as Shiga toxins), including <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>stx1<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> and\/or <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>stx2<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">. These toxins have been implicated in the damage of the intestinal wall and can cause severe gastrointestinal illness. The total number of described serotypes within this group of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><i>E. coli<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"> bacteria is more than 500.
