In the following years, <i>E. coli<\/i> was increasingly identified as a trigger of gastrointestinal diseases. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>E. coli<\/i> is classified as a gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria that belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family. They occur naturally in the intestine of humans and animals and include apathogenic, facultative pathogenic, and obligate pathogenic strains. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h1 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>ENTEROPATHOGENIC VARIANTS OF ESCHERICHIA COLI <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The two obligate pathogenic strains EHEC (enterohaemorrhagic <i>E. coli<\/i>) and EPEC (enteropathogenic <i>E. coli<\/i>) are among the most significant pathogens causing bacterial gastroenteritis, which can range from mild to severe. <span style=\"color: #000000;\">The symptoms include amongst others bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps or fever. Furthermore, EHEC <\/span>has also been associated with severe complications, including hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can result in acute renal failure. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Infection with these pathogenic bacteria occurs primarily through the process of smear infection. The main sources of infection are the consumption of contaminated food such as raw milk, minced meat, or vegetables, as well as contaminated water. Furthermore, an infection through contact with an infected person is also a possibility. Pregnant women, infants, children under five years of age, elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The prevention of EHEC and EPEC infections is based on the interruption of the chain of transmission by maintaining food, hand, and drinking water hygiene. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Consistent adherence to hygiene standards can significantly reduce the risk of infection. In order to prevent the spread of infection, it is important to maintain strict hand hygiene, particularly following contact with animals or prior preparation of meals. In addition, it is recommended that meat is thoroughly cooked, and that raw milk and raw sausage products are avoided. Fruit and vegetables should be washed thoroughly or peeled, as this reduces the bacterial load. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h1 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>REPORTING REQUIREMENT UNDER THE INFECTION PROTECTION ACT <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In Germany, the majority of EHEC outbreaks are attributable to food contamination. Both EHEC and EPEC <span style=\"color: #000000;\">infections are subject to mandatory reporting in Germany under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gesetze-im-internet.de\/ifsg\/__7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Section 7 of the Infection Protection Act (IfSG)<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the rapid detection of the source of infection and for prevention of enteropathogenic <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Escherichia coli<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> outbreaks, <\/span><span style=\"color: #006699;\">CON<\/span><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><b>GEN<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> has developed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congen.de\/en\/food-analysis\/food-microbiology\/\"><span style=\"color: #006699;\">SureFast\u00ae EHEC\/EPEC 4plex (Art. No. F5128)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> kit. This kit is a real-time PCR test for the direct, qualitative detection and differentiation of specific DNA sequences of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Escherichia coli<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> virulence factors <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>stx1<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (subtype a-d), <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>stx2<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (subtype a-g), <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>eae<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, as well as the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>E. coli<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>Shigella <\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">spp. virulence factor <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>ipaH<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> in enriched food. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The real-time PCR assay can be performed with commonly used real-time PCR instruments, equipped for detection of four fluorescence emissions at the channels FAM, VIC\/HEX, ROX and Cy5 at the same time and has a limit of detection of \u2264 5 DNA copies. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For further differentiation of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>E. coli<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> strains, <\/span><span style=\"color: #006699;\">CON<\/span><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><b>GEN<\/b><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> offers real-time PCR kits that enable direct qualitative detection of specific DNA sequences of <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><i>E. coli<\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> serotypes, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congen.de\/en\/food-analysis\/food-microbiology\/\"><span style=\"color: #006699;\">SureFast\u00ae Escherichia coli Serotype I 4plex (Art.No. F5167) <\/span> <\/a>and <span style=\"color: #006699;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congen.de\/en\/food-analysis\/food-microbiology\/\">SureFast\u00ae Escherichia coli Serotype II 4plex (Art.No. F5168)<\/a>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since the 1920s, the relevance of the bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli) as a cause of infections has been recognised.
