It is the only species in the genus <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Cocos<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> and is one of the most well-known palm trees globally, predominantly cultivated in tropical climates. Botanically, the coconut is categorised as a drupe, not a nut. For the food industry, the edible white flesh, coconut oil and coconut water are of particular significance. The clear coconut water is a popular product, offering a rich source of fibre, proteins, fats, antioxidants, vitamin C and minerals, such as potassium, calcium and magnesium. Coconut milk, a mixture of coconut water and coconut flesh is a popular ingredient in Asian cuisine and is also gaining popularity in Europe. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong>Coconut and allergens<\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In Europe, there is no legal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmel.de\/DE\/themen\/ernaehrung\/lebensmittel-kennzeichnung\/pflichtangaben\/allergenkennzeichnung.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">requirement<\/a> to label coconut as an allergen, given that coconut allergies are very uncommon compared to other food allergies. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In the USA, all food manufacturers are required to label the eight most common food allergens in accordance with Food and Drug Association (FDA) regulations. These eight most common food allergens include milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans, as these food groups have the potential to trigger allergic reactions. Since coconut is categorised as a tree nut, it is one of the most common triggers of food allergens according to the FDA. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">For this reason, the coconut must be labelled as an allergen in accordance with the applicable guidelines of the \u201eAllergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004\u201c (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-allergensgluten-free-guidance-documents-regulatory-information\/food-allergen-labeling-and-consumer-protection-act-2004-falcpa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FALCPA<\/a>).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h1 align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><b>Detection of coconut DNA <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In recent years, there has been a notable increase in global demand for coconut products, with applications in both the food industry and cosmetics. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">To ensure the detection of coconut and to distinguish it from other plants and nuts (including almond, hazelnut, walnut, macadamia nut, cashew, pistachio), <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">CON<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>GEN<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">has developed a real-time PCR kit for the direct qualitative detection of specific DNA sequences of coconut in food. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Combined with <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congen.de\/lebensmittelanalytik\/nukleinsaeure-extraktion\/\"><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">SureFood<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><sup><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00ae<\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> PREP Advanced <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">kit<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (see protocol 1), the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congen.de\/lebensmittelanalytik\/lebensmittelallergene\/\"><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">SureFood<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><sup><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00ae<\/span><\/span><\/sup><\/span><span style=\"color: #006699;\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> ALLERGEN Coconut<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, serif; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> kit has a detection limit of \u2264 1mg \/ kg.
