Last week Norovirus was detected in frozen strawberries from Frost Import GmbH. The presence of Norovirus caused product recalls in Germany, Denmark and Switzerland.

According to information of the RASFF Portal Norovirus genotype II was detected in samples with Egypt as state of origin.
Noticeable is the long period from sampling (beginning of may) to official reporting of the results and product recalls (middle of June).
Regarding this fact we would like to refer to our fast and specific methods for the detection of norovirus.
Using the SureFast® PREP DNA/RNA Kit RNA can be extracted from concentrated washing fluids. Generated RNA can be analysed using the real-time PCR RT kits SureFast® Norovirus PLUS or the multiplex PCR SureFast® Norovirus /Hepatitis A 3plex. The methods are based on DIN CEN ISO/TS 15216-1 Horizontal method for determination of hepatitis A virus and norovirus in food using real-time RT-PCR. Within only a few hours clear results could be generated.
In case of a positive result, the differentiation between genotype I and II can be performed in our lab.
