Animal identification (Animal ID) – methods and a new research project

Not only after the big horse meat scandal in 2013 national and private laboratories need detection methods to identify animal species.

Specific rapid methods are neccesary to detect unknown or undeclared animal species to avoid

  • contamination (halal/kosher)
  • product adulteration (beef? horse?)
  • or health risks (BSE mad cow disease)

Using SureFood® ANIMAL ID and QUANT real-time PCR kits, the detection of a range of animal species is possible:

This kits allow national and private laboratories to generate fast, specific and clear results.

Food and feed producer need rapid methods for local monitoring to avoid contamination, product adulteration or health risks.

Based on this aspects a new research project Animal ID ” in Germany was launched by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR). Different rapid methods based on immunological detection or mass spectrometry in combination with innovative peptide and protein enrichment methods should be developed.
