16th Professional Symposium on Food Microbiology April 2016

Stuttgart-Hohenheim, 30th March – 1st April 2016

The 16th Professional Symposium on Food Microbiology took place from 30th March to 1st April 2016 in Stuttgart-Hohenheim.
As a joint event organized by the expert groups of the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology (DGHM) and the Association for General and Applied Microbiology (VAAM) this symposium has a long tradition and provides a broad platform for all areas of food microbiology.
This year various topics from the following fields were discussed: protective cultures, fermentation, spoilage, pathogens, legal framework, methodology development, diagnostics and quality control.
CONGEN actively participated in this symposium by presenting two poster contributions. The first poster showed the development results of our real-time PCR system SureFast® Legionella Screen PLUS. This kit contains a positive control, which corresponds to the limit of Legionella spp. concentration of 100 CFU/ml as stated in the German regulation for drinking water “Trinkwasserverordnung (TrinkwV)”. Therefore it presents an interesting alternative to the classical microbiological procedures.
The second poster presented our newly developed real-time PCR assay SureFast® Salmonella Serotype 3plex which can differentiate between the two leading causes of human salmonellosis S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium. Since EU regulation 1086/2011 determines the routine screening of fresh poultry meat for those two serovars, this test provides food business operators with a useful tool to take adequate measures for consumer protection in all stages of the food production chain.
